Be the Light

Sunset through clouds

October was an incredible month for me!  Not only have we opened a studio of our own in Bishop Sutton, for Yoga and BODYBALANCE, I had the amazing opportunity to be involved with the filming of BODYBALANCE 72 at the Globen in Stockholm.  I think I am just about coming up for air, and yet, I am in Manchester this weekend for a seminar as well as the final Les Mills UK One Live event of the year.

Yet, despite such highs, it is November and the nights are really drawing in.  Perhaps you are noticing a change in how you feel generally and the impact of the darkness on your spirit.  I certainly notice it as I drive to the studio.  It is more noticeable I think because the studio is in a village; so rather than driving into the city, with lots of street lights, the lack of those in a village makes the darkness seem darker.

Whilst it can seem easy to just drop into that darkness, remember that from darkness, there is growth.  Think about it … a seed is encased in darkness when it is planted in soil.  An embryo grows within the darkness of the womb.  It is a flip perception.  I thought about this yesterday, when I got in my car and noticed that a bird had made two deposits on my windscreen.  After a very busy October, I finally had my car cleaned two days ago, and here we go, bird poop!  And yet, I heard my grandmother’s voice saying that bird poo is an auspicious sign, a blessing, and that made me smile.

I have been there; the urge to just curl up under the duvet and wait … for what, I don’t really know.  And if I am being honest, I was feeling sorry for myself.  I will say that the dark nights do get to me still, and the rain and the cold.  Yet, I am more aware of what is affecting me and so I can take steps to help myself.  I don’t have a S.A.D. lamp, although I know lots of people who swear by them.  I do have a daily vitamin D spray.

And, I constantly remind myself of my goals and best vision for my life.  I do believe that is important as it is easy to get dragged down by the small stuff.

You can also play around with your Yoga practice and introduce an element of lightness to your mat.  That is what we will be doing in class this month.  Bring a sense of lightness to your mat.  Play.  Laugh.  Be light.  And that lightness will translate into your heart.

Life is serious as it is.

We can’t change the seasons.

We can change our perception and take charge of what we do on a daily basis.

Till next time … x
